cleansed
The Milan Duomo, originally built in 1386 it’s constantly “a work in progress.” Perhaps you may be thinking this means that the Duomo is constantly under construction, however what they mean by this is that they have an ongoing project to clean the darkness off the walls and ceiling caused by pollution.
The process they use to clean seems rather sporadic, with a column cleaned here and a wall here, but I kind of like it.
I was astonished at the difference between the portions that had been cleansed and those that had not. I so longed for the whole place to be restored to its former beauty, it really would be reminiscent of a Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
When thinking about why I loved the process they were taking to clean this building, I recalled the feeling after one repents. You feel so light and free and full of light. I have felt what it’s like to be restored through the power of Jesus Christ.
Perhaps this is why I connected with the Duomo so much, I know what it feels like to be in darkness and be brought into light.
The church is shaped like a cross, and the walls in the east at the bottom of the cross were replaced by some beautiful stained glass windows.
The artist designed the windows so that when the sun rises, the church would be filled with light throughout the day.
There are 52 pillars within the church, representing the 52 weeks of the year. This symbolizes that the hope of Christs light will be with us not just throughout the day, but throughout the year and every stage of our life.
